Last Wednesday the OpenText Enterprise World took place – the purely digital version. The “real” version, which was supposed to happen last week in Prague, was transformed in light of the COVID19 situation.
I “attended” the show and the official part is just over. Let me give you a short overview of the most important topics, as well as the news around OpenText Documentum.

Mark Barrenechea’s (CIO and CTO of OpenText) key note revolved around two catchwords. One was “Resilient Enterprise”, which covers several aspects. OpenText have acquired several companies that deal with IT security products and have integrated their products into their portfolio. In addition, “resilient” also refers to the ability of companies to continue to function in today’s world with Remote Work – with the help of OpenText products.

However, the most prominent feature of the Key Notes at OpenText Enterprise World Digital was “Release CE” – OpenText’s Cloud Edition. OpenText have now prepared all their products for cloud-native deployment and support various operating models: from classic use in your own data center, running on hyperscaler infrastructure, supporting most well-known platforms – managed or self-managed, up to the OpenText Cloud and SaaS.
In this regard, BYOL applies: bring your own license. Only for the managed services and hosting you may have to pay extra.

The Cloud Edition has a promising side effect: OpenText plan quarterly releases for all products – and have introduced a new versioning scheme composed of year and quarter: the freshly released version of all OpenText products now has the version number 20.2.

What about OpenText Documentum?

Lately it has been rather quiet around Documentum. Of course there were regular releases, but there was not much attention on the platform. But in the new version 20.2 some things have changed. Just as for the other products, the new Documentum version is part of the “Cloud Edition”. But before I come to the subject “cloud”, a few words to the updates of individual components.

The functional updates run under the keyword Digital Business & Digital Workspace. A few highlights of the updates

• Extended ECM Documentum for SAP has been released
• D2 Smart View now supports Virtual Documents and a repository browser tree
• D2 Mobile for iOs and Android devices supports editing and saving of documents on the go and has better integration in standard MDM software
• Seamless integration into Microsoft Office 365 with Content Connect
• Documentum Connector for Sharepoint allows to “Save as record” from Sharepoint into Documentum, as well as UX improvements
• Integration with Microsoft Team

As I mentioned, OpenText Documentum is really cloud-ready now. Continuous quarterly updates are announced that are to be deployed in a fraction of the time used before. Scalability has been improved by leveraging Docker, Kubernetes and Helm Charts and support of the “cloud of your choice” – which includes “no cloud”. Finally an isolation of product and custom changes aims to minimize efforts for updates even further.
OpenText’s claim for cloud deployments is “production ready while at lunch” – everything should be up and running in 40 minutes for complex setups with various extra services. Sounds like a marketing promise – but is possible with the techologies used.

The “cloudification” of Documentum also includes the integration in other OpenText products, for example Capture, AI, Analytics and also with public cloud services provided by the big players in that market, such as Google and Amazon. OpenText already demonstrated last year how they integrated InfoArchive with intelligent services from Google Cloud, transcribing and translating audio files on the fly. Very promising for future use cases.

The last notable component I would like to mention is OpenText InfoArchive. The Documentum Connector for InfoArchive now allows for the simple archiving of information including relevant compliance information such as the retention. OpenText also gave an outlook to new features at OpenText Enterprise World Digital: for example a federated search in Documentum that includes results from InfoArchive.

So much for my first impressions of the Opentext Enterprise World Digital. I still have some breakout sessions ahead of me – let’s see what exciting updates are still coming. I will keep you posted.
